One of the most powerful features in CorelDRAW is the vast array of fill types that are available. Not all users explore them in depth and they are really missing out. One of the coolest fill types is the Bitmap Pattern Fills. CorelDRAW installs a number of patterns for immediate use and there are even more patterns available on the extra CDs in the box.
A few months back I told you about a great utility for creating a wide variety of wood patterns. Wood Workshop is completely free and allows you to create patterns up to 3000 x 3000 pixels. Over 100 presets are included and you can modify them to create thousands more patterns.
Of course companies don’t often give away software just to be nice. In this case, they are hoping you’ll want to create patterns of materials other than wood. That’s where their Genetica product comes into play. You can try it for free, but you’ll have to pay after a trial period. Included are over 500 presets and a ton of ways you can customize the patterns to get exactly what you desire.
That brings us to the latest announcement from the folks at Spiral Graphics. They have released another free product. It is called Genetica Viewer and allows you to render, but not modify, even more patterns. Included are around 200 patterns. Again, they can all be rendered up to 3000 x 3000 pixels.
If nothing else, you should get the free products as they give you lots of high-quality patterns to use in CorelDRAW or any other program that can use seamlessly tiling bitmaps. You should also give Genetica a long look. For those who want complete control to create an endless variety of patterns, Genetica is the tool for you.
