The Worst Fonts Ever

October 12, 2006

There has been a discuss in the Corel Support Newsgroups lately about the proper fonts to use and some that users are just plain sick of seeing. Then I ran across a page today titled America’s Most Fonted: The 7 Worst Fonts. They have a pretty good list of fonts to avoid and I decided I’d list of few of the fonts that CorelDRAW users are sick of seeing.

At the top of the most hated CorelDRAW font list would have to be Avant Garde Bk BT. Why? Quick simply because it was the default font for many versions and a lot of users tended to just use it because it was there. It is a great font is used in the right places, but it has been overused to the point where nobody wants to see it for a while.

Probably the most obnoxious font that ever came with CorelDRAW was Beehive. I still remember seeing a boxing poster in a Tampa hotel that used this font and it immediately identified that the poster had been designed in CorelDRAW. The ugly font was just the first sign that the designer needed to go to design school.

We can always throw Times, Arial and Helvetica (Switzerland) on the list just because they are overused. Sad because they can be useful faces in the right situations. I really do like the Helvetica Neue family, I just have to be careful not to use it too much.

Most users of computer software don’t have a background in design school. This means they make poor choices when choosing fonts to use. Are you willing to learn more about type so you don’t make those mistakes? Great, I knew you wanted to know more. Here are a few books you might want to explore: TypeStyle: How to choose and use type on a personal computer, Type Idea Index: The Ultimate Designer’s Tool for Choosing And Using Fonts Creatively, Logo Font & Lettering Bible: A Comprehensive Guide to the Design, Construction and Usage of Alphabets and Symbols.

So those are some of my most hated fonts and some tips for learning more. What fonts do you hate? Do you have any design resources to share?

Comic Sans walks into a bar. The Bartender looks at it and says, “We don’t serve your type in here.”

Fonts like Beehive are just appalling, but fortunately you don’t see them used often. Comic Sans is the kind of font that is overused and used for wrong purposes and it just signals bad taste and amateurishness. I have sometimes even seen it on cars, cut in vinyl and that’s not good for signmakers reputatuion…

Re Comic Sans, give us a break. It is casual without being illegible. It may be subject to overuse, but sometimes a more formal font is not appropriate. Just because it’s been abused doesn’t mean it is tasteless or amateurish. Consider something like those dreadful “handwriting” fonts so widespread today. Now THOSE are some of the worst fonts ever.

I used to love Bradley Hand . . . until my Pastor fell in live with it & uses it on everything. Full letters in the church Bulletin etc.
Try reading it in 10pt type for 4 paragraphs.
To quote my father-in-law (art dir at Kenner Toys during Star Wars) “There’s just no accounting for bad taste!”
Like a “Head On” commercial can make you want to scream. With thousands of fonts out there – why settle for a numbing repeation?
