Hump Day Hardware: Hard Drive Adapter

September 24, 2008

Today’s hardware will appeal to those of you who enjoy tinkering with your computers or anyone who has ever had to transfer data from a loose hard drive.

The Sabrent USB Serial ATA or IDE adapter will allow you to connect most any hard drive to the USB port on your computer. As an example, I have an old laptop computer that has died. But it has some data on it that I’d like to recover. I simply need to pull the hard drive from the laptop and use this adapter to connect it to the USB port of another computer and I can copy the data from that drive. The same would be true of a drive you pulled from an old computer.

Sure, you could try installing the drive in the computer, but that requires opening the case and hooking everything up. This adapter makes it very easy to quickly connect the drive, copy the data and get on to other tasks. Again, this adapter isn’t for everyone, but could be a lifesaver for some of you.
