Specs for Dream Computer 2011

November 3, 2010

It is hard for me to believe, but I’ve been running my dream computer for over a year now. Every now and then I have a minor complaint with it, but overall I’m very happy. Since the components I picked last year may not be the ideal components for someone building a computer today, I’m going to start covering each of the components I would use if I built a new computer today. Over the next several weeks I’ll talk about a specific component with the choice I would make. Maybe I’ll have an alternate or two for those who want to save a few bucks in that area. After I’ve covered each of the components, I’ll do a final post putting all the pieces together.

Before I get started, I want to have input from readers. What components are absolutely necessary to cover? Are there any components I haven’t covered in the past that you think I should include? Do you have a favorite component you think should be in Dream Computer 2011? I’m open to any suggestions you might have as I want to put together the best computer possible for anyone needing a new computer. I can only do that with your help!

I built my computer almost one year ago, and read your postings about your build with interest at the time. I ended up with a design which has served me well, with some reservations. My base was an Intel I7 860 2.8GHz processor, ASUS P7P55D Pro system board with 4 GB memory (since upgraded to 8 GB). I used a Corsair 550VX power supply and 2 WD SATA drives, a 320 for system and 640 for data (photos, etc).

My questionable components have been the Logitech cordless Wave Pro keyboard/mouse combo which I jettisoned after finding it would not work with the upgrades to Nikon Capture NX2 software. I now run a wired MS keybord 2000 and a wireless MS mouse (5000).

I am also questioning the nVidia Quadro FX 380 grahics card which I thought would be a solid match (don’t do gaming) for photo editing and other general computing. I have seen strange results, most recently in Gallery3 and before that some strange results in Capture NX2. I am suspicious that some errors I see in PhotoPaint X5 have their origins in this graphics card, although some gross errors in X5 were fixed by removing the Logitech software.

If I could be certain that a different graphics card would improve things I would swap it out but that would be an expensive shot in the dark.
