Memory for Dream Computer 2011

December 8, 2010

I’ve already outlined some of the components for Dream Computer 2011. Now it is time to load up the box with memory. In my opinion, you should add the most memory that the motherboard allows. Sure, it most cost a bit more to have that much memory. Yet I think you’ll get more bang by spending the few extra bucks. The memory you get is dependent on which motherboard you selected so I’ll list three choices.

For those who went with an Intel Core i7 (LGA 1366 chips) and the associated motherboard, a darned good choice is the Corsair TR3X6G1600C8 set. In fact, get two sets for a total of 12 GB of memory. Only around $260 for 12 GB of memory! One benefit of this choice of motherboard is that there are three channels of memory per bank.

If you instead went with an Intel LGA 1156 based motherboard, you only have two channels of memory per bank. That saves you money, but it also means you can’t have as much memory overall. I’d suggest the Corsair XMS3 4 GB set. Again, get two sets for the total of 8 GB of RAM. That will cost less than $180!

Lastly, let’s go with the Corsair XMS3 DSX 4 GB set for the AMD-based motherboard. Once again, you’ll want to get two sets for a total of 8 GB of RAM. That will cost you less than $150.

There is less expensive memory available. It may be of lower quality or lower speed. There is also better, faster memory available. I think these choices give you the perfect balance for your new computer.
