Seven Habits That Make Better Designers

January 6, 2011

I got the idea for this post from Seven Habits That Make Better Photographers – No Camera Needed. I’m not going to list all seven of the tips from that post, so give it a read and then I’ll expand on a couple of them and how they can apply to all design and not just photography.

While I was traveling through Peru, I had my eyes wide open for scenes that would make a great photo. Of course they are scenes that appealed to me and they may not appeal to everyone. That is part of being yourself. Even though I’m talking about photos, the same can apply to any design.

I love to read both fiction and non-fiction. Reading about the history of Peru gave me ideas of what could make for an important photo. And I agree that fiction can help you to visualize. One thing that was amazing in Peru were the very detailed nativity scenes. One of the churches I visited had a massive display with hundreds (maybe thousands) of characters. I’m sure the designer spent a lot of time planning the scene. On one of them, I actually laid down on the floor to get a picture because I thought it would give me the best photo.

There is no doubt we can all improve our design and photography skills. That doesn’t mean you can’t be confident that you are pretty darned good already. Design with confidence and it will show in the design you create. Don’t be afraid to try something as you can always try something else if it doesn’t really work.

Those are my thoughts on these tips. Read them over and post a comment with your thoughts!
