Disk Cleanup Essential to Healthy Computer

July 9, 2011

Today I’m going to tell you about software you already have. While you have it, I’m guessing most users don’t know about it. It is called the Disk Cleanup Wizard and it comes with Windows (at least XP, Vista and 7). To launch it, go to your Start menu and find the Accessories / System Tools folder. When it launches, it will ask you what drive to clean. Most likely you’ll want to select your C drive or wherever you store your operating system. Then you get a dialog with a bunch of choices as shown below.

If you look at the screen shot, I have the Temporary Files option currently highlighted. Every time you have a crash, files get left behind in that folder. As they pile up, they can lead to more crashes. You probably want to run this wizard once a month or so. Don’t only delete the Temporary Files, look over the other options as well. You can save a lot of space on your hard drive by getting rid of the unnecessary stuff that has piled up. Sometimes it can delete many gigabytes of worthless stuff!

While we are talking about deleting extra stuff, I wanted to highlight a post I did a year ago on deleting extra stuff in CorelDRAW files. That “extra stuff” can cause corrupted files, crashing and a huge slow down. I also encourage you to look carefully at the number of fonts you have installed. If there are more than 400 (including all weights), you have too many installed. This doesn’t mean you can’t have more fonts. I have over 30,000 on my computer. They just aren’t installed!

These are just a few of the basic things you need to do to keep your computer and software running smoothly. What other things do you do to keep your computer in top shape? Post a comment on the blog or on our Facebook page and share your tips.
