Problem Steps Recorder Can Help Solve Problems

July 16, 2011

I’ve told you in the past about people who say “It Doesn’t Work” and are surprised when nobody has a solution to their problem. I passed along even more tips in It Still Doesn’t Work. The key to getting a problem solved is properly describing the problem.

Today’s utility is a great way to describe things in more detail. It is called the Problem Steps Recorder and it is included in Windows 7 (I am not sure about Vista and XP). From your start menu, just type “PSR” in the search box and it will launch.

The interface is very simple with only three buttons. Start Record will record what you are doing on your computer. Stop Record stops the recording and Add Comment allows you to put your own comments in the file. Once you’ve saved the recording, you can pass the file on to a support professional. This way they can visually see what you are doing. Note that it does not record any text that you type for privacy reasons. If what you type is important, make sure to put that in the comments.
