You May Lose Internet Access on Monday!

July 7, 2012

Did the headline grab your attention? I hope so, because there is a nasty piece of malware that could disconnect you from the Internet on Monday. Estimates claim that 277,000 Windows PCs are affected by the DNS Changer Malware. There is currently a safety net in place and the FBI will be taking it down on Monday.

It is really easy to find out if your computer is infected and it will only take a minute or two to run the test. Visit the DNS Changer Working Group Site (the FBI has approved the site). There is a green Detect button at the top left of the page. It will take you to a page with details of what is being done to test your system. There are separate links on the page for a number of languages. Click on the link for your language (the top link is the English one). A page will come up telling you the result. Hopefully it is “green” (like the graphic above right) and you are not infected. If you are infected, there are some instructions for getting it removed. Admittedly, you may have to re-install Windows from scratch as the designers of malware don’t want you to remove it.

Internet Security SuiteGoing forward, it is very important that you have good, constantly updated, security software installed on your computer. We use the ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite in our office and have been using it for a number of years with great success (no infections). Other choices include PC Tools Internet Security, Norton 360, and BitDefender 2012.
