Ground and Space Show Technology Shift

October 15, 2012

This past weekend provided two unique events related to space. First was the final journey of the space shuttle Endeavor as it navigated the streets of Los Angeles. Maneuvering such a large vehicle through city streets was every bit as complex as the 25 missions it flew into space.

A friend of mine took his boys to a location on the route and sent me a picture of it Endeavor as it passed him. I’ve included the picture below so you can take a look for yourself.

You certainly don’t see something like that going down the street on a regular basis. Beyond the obvious, the massive number of cameras, tablets and phones caught my eye. This picture alone must have at least 100 photographic devices held up in the air. Even ten years ago it was rare for a person to have a digital camera and now most of us have multiple devices for taking digital photos.

Endeavor reached its new home at the California Science Center on Sunday morning as another space-related event was underway. Felix Baumgartner rode a balloon to 128,000 feet of altitude and then jumped. Some of the pictures captured from his capsule were breathtaking and watching him fall to earth at faster than the speed of sound took your breath away. Again, the technology that brought us such stunning video was awesome.

I’ll leave you with a quote from Felix that we can all apply to our lives.

“Don’t live life as a spectator. Always examine life: Espouse new ideas, long for new things, constantly discovering new interests, escaping from boring routines. Engage life with enthusiasm; grasping life aggressively and squeezing from it every drop of excitement, satisfaction, and joy.”

“The key to unleashing life’s potential is attitude. The person who approaches life with a child-like wonder is best prepared to defy the limitations of time, is more “alive,” more of a participant in life than the person who remains a spectator.”
