Let me start out by saying this video card is the top-of-the-line when it comes to desktop computer video cards. It is overkill for 99.9% of computer users so I’m not really expecting any of you to run out and buy one for your computer. Now that I have that out of the way, I’ll tell you the current price is around $1300.
So why would I talk about a video card that I don’t expect any of you to buy? Quite simply because this will probably be the mid-range in another year or two and it will be something affordable and practical for most users.
Nvidia has borrowed the technology from their Tesla K20X products used in supercomputers and put it on the Asus GeForce GTX Titan Video Card. Yes, it makes games perform really well. More importantly, it can be programmed with CUDA for incredible parallel computer power. As more of us have video cards with this extra power, developers will provide the ability to take advantage of it in their applications.
Before you think we’re just talking about more gaming power, the processing powered via CUDA can be darned near anything. It simply provides developers a way to do computing tasks with the processor on the video card instead of the CPU in your computer. That means anything that requires a lot of math is a perfect use of such a card. Even an operating system can performing more computing tasks by offloading some things to the processor on the video card.
So if you want to ignore this technology and say it is only for gamers, you may be missing out on a way to have a much faster computer for the tasks you perform. Again, this card is probably not the right choice for you today. But you will find the technology will be important to you sooner than you think.
