I saw a video on YouTube the other day that really got my attention about how GoPro video cameras on being used. In this case, a videographer for a BBC series had set one up to capture video of grizzly bears. While he did get some great shots of the bears, he also got something unexpected when one of the bears tried to eat the camera. Just imagine you are the bear’s dentist and that’s the view you get. How tough is the camera? It survived jaws strong enough to crush a bowling ball! The video is embedded below and I’ve included a link if you are unable to see the embedded version.
For those who weren’t able to see the video in the blog post, you can view the video on YouTube.
Now that you’ve seen the quality of the video it shoots and just how tough it is, let’s talk about the latest series of GoPro cameras. At right you’ll see a photo of the camera, waterproof housing and WiFi remote included in the GoPro Hero3: Black Edition. It is the most expensive version and sells for $399.
At the low end of the GoPro Hero3 line is the GoPro Hero3: White Edition. It comes with the camera and the waterproof (to 197 feet) housing for only $199. Should you want the WiFi remote later, it can be purchased separately. The video quality is “only” 1080p on the White Edition rather than up to 4K on the Black Edition. Given there are so few televisions that can even see the extra resolution, most users won’t need it in the foreseeable future.
There is also the GoPro Hero3: Silver Edition that falls between the other two. It shoots higher resolution still photos than the White Edition, but I don’t really see any reason to get it. Also note that it does not include the WiFi remote. Either you are happy with the White Edition or you want the extra power of the Black Edition.
To get the most from these cameras, there is a huge market for accessories that allow you to mount them in most any way you could imagine. So whether you plan to hold the camera or wear the camera, the GoPro models will let you shoot video most anywhere. And if a grizzly tries to eat it, it might even survive!
