Some of you are just getting started with graphics and aren’t sure how to make a living. Others complain to me constantly about being on a “fixed income” and can’t afford to ever spend any money. No matter your situation, you can earn money from your graphic skills. And for the “fixed income” complainers, I’m not saying you have to work full-time but rather earn a few extra bucks a month. No, they won’t take your fixed income away if you make a little extra from your graphic skills.
I ask all of you, even those who are already “professionals,” to read a really good blog post titled How I Transitioned from Being a Hobbyist to Being a Pro Photographer. While it specifically talks about photography, many of the life lessons described can apply to all areas of graphics.
The author describes how he learned the skills necessary go from something that was just a hobby and turn it into a full-time paying job. No, it isn’t easy and he describes many of the ways that he made sure his name was out there and considered for jobs. I definitely took a few notes from the article and will implement them going forward.
