Google Celebrates 15 Years, Announced Hummingbird and Website Checklist

September 28, 2013

Can you believe that Google has been part of our lives for 15 years now? OK, maybe it hasn’t been part of your life for 15 years, but the company just celebrated its 15th anniversary.

As part of the anniversary, they announced an update that was made to the search algorithm with the name of “Hummingbird.” For those who are not familiar with these updates, Google makes them every now and then to give searchers more relevant results and to prevent less relevant sites from tricking Google into a higher ranking.

One oft mentioned ways to rank well is simply to create “great content” as it will naturally grab a higher ranking without breaking any rules. Obviously that is very good advice. Yet it is also important to do a little bit extra to help a specific page (or site) rank higher. I covered a number of techniques in Design a Web Site That Ranks Well in Search Engines via SEO. No matter who you are or the size of your site, this is something important for your Web site We all want to bring in more business for less marketing money, right?

Sometimes ranking can be improved simply by fixing common problems. The folks at Razor Social recently put together Website Checklist: 15 Essential Items That You Can’t Ignore. Some of these tasks can be completed quickly and others may take more time. Yet it is important for you to check them occasionally to make sure an error on your site isn’t killing your ranking. Block off a little time in the near future to go through this list.
