Most of us now have some way for broadband Internet to entire our house or business. The speed of your Internet is dependent on whichever company is providing the service to you and speeds can range from painfully slow to insanely fast.
Once the Internet has entered your home or business, you need a router to allow multiple devices to connect to the Internet. Most likely, you want a WiFi enabled router so that some of your devices can connect without being plugged in.
There are all kinds of wireless routers on the market and I cover a new one every few months because they can be so important. There are two major features of interest to most users. First, you want a good range so that you can still be connected even in the corner office or that faraway room in your house. Second, you want the connection to be as fast as possible. The Netgear Nighthawk AC1900 Dual Band WiFi Gigabit Router (R7000) delivers in both of those areas.
There is good news to having a wider range covered by a router in that you can connect your devices when farther away from the router. Of course there can also be a downside if someone outside your home or office connects. Yes, this router has all the latest security protocols and it is very easy for you to enable security that will keep all but the most dedicated hackers and even most of them. One other simple trick to help secure your WiFi network is to give it a scary name. If you tried to connect a device and got the network name of “SmithHouse,” you probably wouldn’t hesitate at all. But what if the network name was “NSA-Spynet”? Just that name would scare away some people so you might want to come up with a humorous name to use in your router.
With this router, you’ll likely find the speed delivered by the wireless signal is much faster than your Internet connection. Yes, that does limit how fast you can download content from the Internet though it isn’t the router’s fault. Where that extra speed is handy is moving files around on your in-house network. It is not uncommon for me to move gigabytes of data from my desktop to laptop and back. Having a fast wireless network makes the transfer go much quicker.
If you are in the need for a new router, the Netgear Nighthawk should be seriously considered!
