The GoPro series of cameras are one of the hottest sellers because they allow anyone to capture action movies, including underwater. Last year I wrote GoPro On 60 Minutes Provides Ideas For Creativity. Give it a read and watch the linked segment if you want to see the many things you can do with a GoPro camera. One popular use to to attach the GoPro to a drone for filming through the air and I wrote Your Own Private Drone Is Available Now to show you how you can do it.
It is time to revisit the GoPro lineup as two new cameras have been added. The GoPro Hero4 cameras are not revolutionary as with earlier models, they are evolutionary with some interesting new features.
The GoPro Hero4 Silver retails for $399.99. One of its notable new features is a touch display. It also has built in WiFi and Bluetooth so you can control the camera from an app. Yes, it still includes a waterproof housing that allows you to take it to 131 feet (40 meters).
You can record 1080p video at up to 60 frames per second. There are also settings to record at 2.7K and 4K video at lower frame rates. Want to capture photos? It shoots at 12 megapixel including a 30 frame per second burst mode.
If you want the top of the line, the GoPro Hero4 Black retails for $499.99. It does not include the touch screen found only in the Silver model. Truly the biggest difference is that it can film 4K video at a full 30 frames per second. Given that very few of us have a way to watch 4K video today, that isn’t a feature most users would utilize. A couple of years from now could be a completely different story.
Should I decide to get one of the GoPro Hero4 cameras, I’d definitely save the $100 and get the Silver version since I have no need to film in 4K. If any of you are thinking of getting me a gift, I’d love to receive a GoPro!
