I was talking with a loyal reader a few days and a full drive was causing their computer to run extra slow. As your hard drive runs out of space, your system will slow down drastically. If you’ve not cleaned up your drive lately, take a few minutes to do it now.
The first thing to do is delete files you no longer need. This can be a very short process if there aren’t many files or very long if there are numerous files to decide to delete. Of course even one really big file can clear up a lot of space.
Once you’ve done some manual pruning, turn to the Disk Cleanup tool that is supplied with Windows. I hadn’t run it on my system in a while and you can see it found 15.3 GB of files to delete. You can determine which files to allow it to delete by checking or unchecking the box to the left of each category.
At the bottom is a button that says “Clean up system files” that could delete even more files so go ahead and click it to see if there are additional files worth deleting. Running Disk Cleanup isn’t going to magically double the speed of your computer, but taking the time to run it every month or two will help get rid of some hard drive clutter and give your system a little bit of a speed boost.
