I’ve seen a lot of users complain over the years about how CorelDRAW is constantly crashing. Pick a version, any version. Are there times where CorelDRAW alone is to blame? Absolutely. But if you are truly having that many crashes, I can almost guarantee the problem lies elsewhere.
As I write this, I have CorelDRAW X6 running (I personally don’t like X7 at all). There are five files open. I rarely reboot my computer so this session of CorelDRAW has been running for at least a week now. I don’t have any special version of the software. In short, I rarely have crashes. So rare I can’t even remember the last time it crashed.
Over the years, I’ve had similar experiences. Yes, I have the occasional crash in CorelDRAW and have a few in other pieces of software as well. Sometimes I know I have done something specific that caused the crash. Other times, it seems really random.
Of course everyone wants to know the magic solution that allows me to crash so infrequently. If it really was that simple, I’d gladly share. Unfortunately it can be many things. One thing I always like to check are the drivers. I wrote Faulty Drivers Often the Cause of Windows Instability to address this issue a couple of years ago.
Just a couple of days ago I discussed how having too many fonts install can lead to a variety of problems. Go re-read Mailbag Shows How Too Many Fonts Causes Fonts to Disappear if you need a reminder. Even though with constant crashes say they are too busy to get their fonts under control. Maybe you need to make that time as a way to prevent the crashing.
If you have one specific file or even a few files that always crash then it could be that there is something contained in those files that is problematic. Things like excess color styles, saved views, text styles and other clutter can really weigh down a file. Read Delete Extra Stuff to Speed Up CorelDRAW for info on cleaning up your files.
Some users insist on creating massive files. Read Don’t Create Massive Files for suggestions on how to keep your files smaller. The bigger they get, the more problems you could face. There are also the users who insist on creating CorelDRAW files with too many pages. Read Break Up Long Documents for suggestions.
Are those the only things that can cause crashes? No. But they are a good start. So instead of simply complaining that CorelDRAW crashes constantly, try digging a little deeper to find the real culprit.
I have lots of crashes however I have figured out the cause. A couple years ago the boss picked up Digital Art Solutions Smart Designer. While it does make some things easier to do, on my system at least all it really does for me is cause crashes. I did a fresh install of Corel with out installing the Smart Designer and now I very rarely have crashes
Billy, glad you found your culprit but I have one big issue with what you say. There is NO SUCH PRODUCT as “Corel”. That is the name of a company. While in this specific instance I understand what you mean, please please please give the FULL name of the actual product. In this case you should be saying “CorelDRAW” and it also helps to know the version involved.
