You may have heard that Google changed the company name to Alphabet. You’ll find CEO Larry Page’s explanation for the change on the G is for Google blog post. In short, there are many smaller companies that make up the new Alphabet of which Google is one piece. This is because of all the new directions the company has taken.
One of those new directions are the Nest family of products for home control. Google also has an Internet/Television service called Google Fiber in a limited number of locations. If you are going to have really fast Internet service, you need a great WiFi router and that brings us to the new Google OnHub Wireless Router (shown at right).
It includes a total of 13 high-powered antennas to give you more reliable WiFi in more directions in your house/business. It is loaded with all the other bells and whistles that have become standard features in modern WiFi routers.
Some of the interesting features included are the companion Google On app (iOS and Android shown below) that allows you to setup the router from your phone or tablet. It also automatically updates the software within the router so it has all the latest features and security upgrades. Plus it can communicate with other smart devices in your home via Bluetooth and ZigBee radios. Of course this includes controlling Google’s own Nest devices. Plus it comes with a full 2-year warranty and unlimited tech support 24/7.
This is not a bargain basement router, but the price is very competitive at $199. Amazon is taking pre-orders now and it will begin shipping at the end of the month.
