I was in Kansas City recently and drove past the headquarters for Garmin several times during my visit. This got me to thinking about a company known for building the consumer GPS industry. Once many of us turned to smartphones for GPS and mapping capabilities, Garmin had to re-invent themselves.
They have shifted some of their focus to developing fitness tracking devices. One of the devices they have developed is the Garmin Vivoactive which combines fitness tracking with a smart watch. It has a lower cost than the Apple Watch and most of the Android Wear devices. Yes, it is focused mainly on fitness. But it also connects to smartphones to provide notifications on calls, messages and social interaction.
Of course the main focus is on tracking your fitness activity and connecting that data to your phone or tablet. I know that I sit in front of a computer much longer than I should and this might be the device that helps get me up out of my chair.
Want something less expensive (with fewer features)? The Garmin Vivofit Fitness Band still tracks your fitness, is smaller on your wrist and costs less.
Garmin is one of the bigger players in this category, but certainly not the only player. The biggest company in this space is likely Fitbit and they have competitive products for both of the Garmin products listed above. The Fitbit Surge Fitness Sportswatch would be a competitor to the Garmin Vivoactive. A less expensive option is the Fitbit Charge HR Wireless Activity Wristband.
Regardless of what you choose to track your fitness, even good old pencil and paper, get up from the computer and get some exercise.
