When I first heard about the Nikon Coolpix P900, I have to admit I was a bit skeptical about the 83x optical zoom. It sounds great, but does it really work. Some owners of the camera have shot videos to prove it.
The first one shows a boring parking lot and zooms in to show detailed areas of the moon. Even more impressive is that this video was shot by holding the camera in the photographer’s hands. Yes, there is shake. But the camera compensates quite well.
I’ve got to admit, that video really got me excited. What happens if you use a tripod? Again, there is a video that again shows a zoomed in view of the moon. It zooms so tight that you can see the moon move!
I wasn’t really in the market for a new DSLR and I’ve always carried Canon equipment. Yet this camera has me really excited and I may just have to add it to my bag for the zoom capabilities! Yes, it has a bunch of other great features like built-in WiFi and GPS. You’ll definitely want to check the product page at Amazon to see everything it can do. I just can’t get over the zoom!
I’ve had one of these cameras for about a year and it is impressive. I almost never can make use of full zoom but that is okay – I am usually shooting in the mid range sweet spot. I don’t need or use the wifi abilities and wish I could disable them. (I keep hitting the wifi button by mistake in low light situations.) Battery life is amazingly good.
The camera is not cheap but neither is a pair of zoom lenses that might give the same range. A bigger sensor would be nice and so would a faster lens but that would increase lens size and cost to an unacceptable level.
