Most like every computer user would love to have the best processor available. Unfortunately it isn’t always practical. While there may be a reader or two who goes for it, the rest of us can only dream about the Intel Core i9-7980XE. Yes, that’s a link to Amazon where I would receive a commission if you click on it. Don’t even think I got one for free!
What will keep most of us from getting this processor? Quite simply the price as the initial list price is $2000! Why is it so good? It has 18 cores capable of running 36 threads. While the base clock is listed at 2.6 GHz, it realistically runs each core at around 3.4 GHz when under load and can go up to 4.4 GHz. Holy cow is that a lot of speed!
When it is under full load, it can also pull around 500 watts of power. That’s far higher than the 165 watts listed. Not only is the processor expensive, you’ll need a lot of other high-end parts in the computer to go with it.
Now let’s look at another new CPU that mere mortals can at least consider in a new computer, the Intel 8th Gen Core i7-8700K Processor. It is less than 20% of the price and still packs a lot of speed. It has six cores and twelve threads running at a base clock of 3.7 GHz. It can turbo as fast as 4.7 GHz per core. The listed power draw is 95 watts thought it may pull as much as twice that. That’s still far less then the Core i9-7980XE.
Both of these processors are really fast and a big upgrade from my current computer. If you are in the market for a new machine in the near future, give these two CPUs a look. Yes, it is still worth looking at both even if you know the first one is way out of your budget. It never hurts to look!
