What Is That Color? Qué es de ese color?

October 4, 2012

When working on a design, it can be very difficult to properly communicate the desired color. Let’s just use the generic “red” as an example. Does that really tell you what color to use?

Is that Candy Apple Red? Fire Brigade Red? Reddish Orange? Strawberry Red? Burnt Mahogany? Pale Cherry Red? I could go on and on, but I think you get the idea.

The folks at CrowdFlower have put together a really cool color chart (screen shot of it at right) entitled What Color is this? Each of the dots you see in the graphic (4000 of them) represents a single color. If you hover over the dot, it will show you the name of that color in nine different languages! Capisce?

It is pretty fascinating to check out some of the color names and the translations. I spent several minutes checking it out and I’m sure I’ll go back again.

My Spanish is rusty but don’t think the translation is correct.

As my Spanish is rusty, I can’t say definitively if this is correct or not. I have asked some who are Spanish speakers and they have told me it depends on which variation of Spanish is used and it is correct for some regions.

Since the tool being discussed displays color names in nine different languages, I wanted to include at least a second language in the title.
