Defending the Smiley

November 5, 2012

Can you believe the smiley recently celebrated its 30th birthday? I certainly don’t remember it being around back then and it may have been the mid-90s before my life was first blessed with a smiley.

Now they are on our computers, our phones and darned near everyone else. Yes, I even include some smiley artwork in my CorelDRAW X6 Unleashed book.

The folks at Prospect Magazine recently did a piece entitled In defence of the smiley where they claim it is time to give the smiley the praise it deserves. Yes, it is a small thing. Yes, it is probably overused. But I’m a big fan of the smiley and I’m sure glad it is part of our electronic lives!

The anniversary is for the emoticon:-), not for the round smiley face☺. That has been around since at least 1953.
