I lived in a home for 22 years that had a built-in security system. During that time, I never connected the system to a monitoring service. But I did activate the system when I was away from home and I did appreciate the system would beep anytime someone opened an external door. After a few years the sensors began failing and I never used the system again. Now I’m considering a home security system for my current home (it has an obsolete wired system) and I’ll talk about the pros and cons. Yes, there will be Amazon links to buy the system and various add-ons that earn me a commission. No, I didn’t receive anything else to write this.
If you’ve watched any US television in the past years, you’ve likely seen an ad featuring the character Robbert Larson. Often I remember a commercial even though I have no idea what product or service is being promoted. In this case they’ve done a good job and I knew Robbert was promoting SimpliSafe. So the system I’m considering is the SimpliSafe 8 Piece Wireless Home Security System.
There are other kits you can choose to get something that meets your needs. Just check the SimpliSafe store to see the other kits. All kits will contain the home base and a wireless keypad. The 8 Piece kit I’m considering adds four entry sensors for doors, windows or cabinets. It also has a motion sensor and a panic button. For my needs, that’s probably more than enough. One of the good things about the SimpliSafe system is that you can add accessories as needed. Below I’ve listed some of the accessories you can add.
- SimpliSafe Water Sensor Alarm-Flood Detection
- SimpliSafe Glassbreak Sensor – 20ft. Range – Sound Detection Technology
- SimpliSafe Entry Sensor – Window and Door Protection
- SimpliSafe Temperature Sensor – Hot/Cold Detection
- SimpliSafe Panic Button – Built-in Silent Panic Feature
- SimpliSafe KeyFob – Arm and Disarm Remotely – Built-in Panic Button
- SimpliSafe Motion Sensor – 45ft. Range – Infrared Heat Signature Technology
- SimpliSafe 105dB Auxiliary Siren
- SimpliSafe Doorbell
- SimpliSafe Camera (1080p Indoor)
- SimpliSafe Smartlock
As you can see, there are lots of things the SimpliSafe system can monitor for you. There are monitoring plans where the system can notify various authorities and allow you remote options not available without a monitoring plan. The “professional” plan costs $17.99 a month and the “interactive” plan adds more features and is priced at $27.99 a month. If you don’t want to have external monitoring, you can have no plan. For my needs, I am happy to self monitor and not have that extra expense.
Having a wired security system installed was quite expensive and mostly that was due to the wiring. Now everything can be done wirelessly and the SimplySafe system provides protection at a very reasonable cost.
