Why We Deactivated Comments on Graphics Unleashed

Group Discussion
August 6, 2019

When I first starting writing the Graphics Unleashed Blog in 2005, I was excited to have a way to start a conversation and have others continue that conversation via commenting. There have been a few good conversations, but many posts didn’t receive a single comment.

There have been a handful of posts I’ve written that explained how to comment and I begged readers not to email me directly unless it was something very specific. It is far better to post a comment that can benefit everyone. Even if your comment is a question, the answer to that question would then be available to everyone.

Even then, legitimate comments were very limited. At the same time, spammers would do everything they could to post comments. Instead of spending my time conversing with readers, I was fighting the spammers efforts. Even some of the “legitimate” comments really seemed like a spammer trying to get through the filters one time so their future spammy comments would get through.

All of this added up to the time to turn off commenting. We’re certainly not the first site to do this and we won’t be the last. Discussion on blog posts can still happen on various social media platforms and we encourage you to comment on the corresponding Facebook post. We didn’t want to take this step, but it just seems like now is the time when it is beneficial for all of us.
