I’ve written about SSD drives many times. They’ve gotten smaller in size. The storage capacity has increased. Speeds have multiplied. While prices are higher than traditional hard drives, they have gone down overall. Today we’ll look at the latest and greatest. Yes, there will be an Amazon link that earns me a tiny commission if you order. No, they weren’t nice enough to send me a free one to test.
Let’s start with how you connect/install the drive. It goes into and NVM3 M.2 slot on your motherboard or inside your laptop. If you’ve purchased your computer in the last few years, it should have such a slot. Takes just a minute to push it into the slot and then use a screw to hold down the opposite end. Note that motherboards often have a heatsink that sits on top of it to help keep it running cool.
What makes an SSD truly outstanding? SPEED! The Sabrent Rocket 4 Plus is one of the fastest SSD drives ever! They list a max sequential read of 7100 MB/s and a max sequential write of 6600 MB/s. An independent test got a max sequential write of 6836 MB/s so the quoted speeds are probably a little conservative.
This drive comes in four sizes and each of them is listed below:
- Sabrent 500MB Rocket 4 Plus NVMe 4.0 Gen4 PCIe M.2 Internal SSD
- Sabrent 1TB Rocket 4 Plus NVMe 4.0 Gen4 PCIe M.2 Internal SSD
- Sabrent 2TB Rocket 4 Plus NVMe 4.0 Gen4 PCIe M.2 Internal SSD
- Sabrent 4TB Rocket 4 Plus NVMe 4.0 Gen4 PCIe M.2 Internal SSD
For me, the 2TB version is the sweet spot between features and pricing. That’s an awful lot of really fast storage and it would make a great stocking stuffer for anyone’s computer!
