Over the last few years, manufacturers have removed the headphone jack from almost all mobile phones. I may not be in the majority, but I have chosen not to get one of the newer phones because I have the last revision that still has a headphone jack. Not just because I use it for headphones, I also use it for plugging in a microphone. Today we’ll look at a lavalier microphone that doesn’t need Bluetooth or the headphone jack. Yes, I’ll post Amazon links that earn me a dime or two. No, I didn’t receive anything else for this post.

I definitely feel like I’m in the minority that still wants a headphone jack since they are all but extinct. While I have wireless headphones, I really like the wired ones I have (different kinds for different uses). In addition, I have external microphones that plug into the headphone jack when recording videos with my phone. When I saw the Wireless Microphone System for iPhone & Smartphones w USB C, it provided a potential solution for an alternative microphone.

There are two main components involved. First is a receiver that plugs in to the USB-C port on your phone or tablet. If you are using an Apple phone, there is also a lightning adapter included. The second piece is the microphone itself which you can clip on your clothing or something else near the sound you wish to capture. These two components sync with each other without using Bluetooth. You can have them as far as 98 feet apart according to the documentation. While I wouldn’t want to push those limits, even 50 feet is probably more than enough distance.

You need to charge up the microphone for use and it claims a battery life of up to ten hours. I can’t think of a situation where that wouldn’t be more than enough for my needs. As you can see in the image above, the microphone can be useful for a wide range of situations.
