Today I want to tell you a little bit about some islands that are probably unknown to many of you. They are fairly remote and the population is small. Yet they contain beauty that I’ve not seen anywhere else.
First, I’ll give you a link to The Atlantic’s photo essay, A Trip to the Faroe Islands. This photo essay reminded me of a visit I made there back in the 80s. Before I tell you a bit about that visit, I should back up and tell you the reason I was there.
When I was a junior in high school, my family hosted an exchange student from the Faroe Islands. That was when I first heard of the islands and during the year I learned much more. One of the most shocking moments for Atli (the exchange student) was going to a baseball game with over 40,000 fans in attendance. He thought to himself how his entire country could fit in the stands and it was a bit overwhelming.
A couple of years after his stay, my family went to visit him in the Faroe Islands. It is a little hazy now, but I think we were only there for about three or four days. We did get to see quite a bit during our time there and tried some of the local delicacies. Admittedly, they weren’t all pleasing to my palette. Nothing horrible, just not my favorites.
If any of you are ever looking for a new location to explore, put the Faroe Islands on your list. It is uniquely beautiful and I hope that one day I can return.
