Just How Many Places Do I Need to Change My Address?

July 24, 2018

In my life, I haven’t moved often. A few of those moves came in a fairly short span as I moved out of my parents’ house and went on to college. Prior to this year, I hadn’t moved in 22 years. During that time the Internet exploded and that just means more places where an address is listed.

My situation is a little more complicated as I will be keeping an address in the US, but I’ll be spending most all of my time in Mexico. My Mexican house gets no mail service. Hopefully most everything can be done electronically so a physical address (and mail) isn’t needed. We can get Amazon deliveries there and that makes me very happy!

Yes, I did the official change of address at the post office. For any online account that I’ve remembered, I’ve also changed it there and switched to paperless delivery if at all possible. How did I not know there are hundreds of places I have to change it? Oh boy, what a chore! Just for our email lists, I had to change it in twelve different places.

Not all addresses are easy to change. Some online properties want to mail a confirmation out for security reasons. I don’t think that will be required at Google, but it was required by Bing. Facebook and Yelp seemed fairly easy. I’m sure there are more that I’ve missed and I’ll get to them one of these days.

For those of you looking for the next big thing, come up with something that allows you to change your address in a single place and have that change applied everywhere. I’d gladly pay for such a service!
